When building a home, you might think that you simply lay
out your plans and ideas and then sit back and let the builders and designers
get to work. Unfortunately, however, building a home rarely runs that simply.
More often than not, there will be a few snags along the way. Maybe building
will get delayed due to weather or perhaps a necessary material will be on back
order. Whatever the case may be, it’s very important for you to say informed
and “in the loop” about the building process.
The best way to stay informed is to have regular progress
meetings, during which you meet with the project supervisor to talk about how
things are going with your project. If everything is going well, these meetings
should be short and sweet, but, if not, they’re a great chance for you to talk
about your concerns and create alternate plans if necessary.
You may also want to insist that all workers use a project
logbook. This logbook is a place for all workers, regardless of their position,
to write down questions, concerns, and incidents that arrive on the job
site.
Not only will the logbook help you to stay abreast of what’s
going on with your building project, but it will also allow you to bring up any
concerns or problems with the project supervisor at your regular meetings. As
you can see, it’s easy to be a part of the entire building process from start
to finish, so there is really no excuse for being uninformed. It’s okay to take
a hands-off approach or to be super-involved, but either way, you still need to
know what’s going on!
